Wyoming Assumed Business Name (DBA)

A Wyoming DBA is registered as a trade name. When a business wants to operate under a name that differs from its legal name — a shop trading under a brand name, a sole proprietor working under a business name, or an LLC running a second product line — Wyoming records that name through the Secretary of State. A trade name is not a separate company. It is a name recorded for use by an existing business or individual, and the legal entity behind the name keeps its existing obligations.

This page covers what a Wyoming trade name registration costs, what the application requires, and how renewal works.

What a Wyoming trade name registration costs

The Secretary of State’s Business Division filing fee schedule, effective July 1, 2026, lists trade name and trademark filings together. A trade name registration costs $100. A trade name renewal costs $50. A trade name assignment costs $25, a cancellation costs $10, and a trade name reservation costs $30. The state filing fee is paid by you at cost, with zero markup, and you see the full total before you pay anything.

A trade name reservation is a separate filing from a registration. It holds a name before registration, while a registration records a name that is already in use. The fee schedule lists the reservation at $30; this page states the fee only, since the reservation term is not stated in the fee schedule.

What the application requires

The Application for Registration of Trade Name is filed with the Wyoming Secretary of State. The application must be signed and notarized. The trade name must be in use prior to registration, and the application asks for the date the name was first used in Wyoming. If the applicant is a business entity, it must be registered and in good standing with the Secretary of State prior to applying for the trade name. The application must comply with Wyoming Statutes 40-2-101 through 40-2-109, and an email address is required, since the address provided receives reminders, notices, and filing evidence.

The application asks for the trade name itself, the applicant’s name, the applicant’s business address and mailing address if different, the applicant type (individual, corporation, general partnership, limited partnership, limited liability company, statutory trust, unincorporated association, statutory foundation, or other), the state of formation for entity applicants, the names and addresses of partners or trustees where applicable, a description of the general nature of the business, and the date first used in Wyoming, with a signature, printed name, title, and contact person.

Processing takes up to 15 business days following the date of receipt in the Secretary of State’s office. Wyoming statutes do not allow for expedited filing of a trade name at this time, and filings are processed in the order they are received. The application must be mailed with payment to the address at the top of the form. The form cannot be accepted by email. The Secretary of State’s office is unable to process incomplete forms, so reviewing the form before submission matters.

How long a Wyoming trade name lasts

Registration is effective for a term of ten years and is renewable. The renewal may not be filed more than six months prior to the expiration, and the Secretary of State notifies registrants whose trade name is up for renewal six months prior to the expiration. The renewal application certifies that the trade name is still in use in Wyoming, and it carries a $50 filing fee with processing of up to 15 business days following receipt. Like the original application, the renewal form must be mailed with payment and cannot be accepted by email.

Because the term is long, a trade name is a durable record. If the business stops using the name, a cancellation filing at $10 keeps the public record accurate. If the name is sold or transferred to another owner, an assignment filing at $25 records the change. Keeping the record current avoids confusion when banks, vendors, or customers check the name.
